UU Visalia Fellowship News
2009 FELLOWSHIP GOALS On February 22, our Fellowship adopted a series of goals in three main areas, Spiritual Growth, Maturational Growth, and Numerical Growth. For each of our goals identified below, we've identified an "action plan" to implement them, and volunteers to lead each effort. Please let any board member know if you would like to help!
Spiritual Growth: I. Improve Quality & Consistency of Worship Service II. Hire a Part time Minister III. Enhance Spiritual Practice / Expand Theological Understanding
Maturational Growth: I. Religious Education Program for Children II. Improve Hospitality to Visitors III. Active Engagement in Local Social Justice Issues
Numerical Growth: I. Marketing II. Evangelizing III. Visibility in the community IV. Physical Visibility
PLEDGE DRIVE Visalia UU Fellowship members will soon be receiving requests for pledges for the 2009-10 fiscal year in order for the budget committee, Treasurer and Board to prepare a budget for the annual meeting in May.
SAVE-MART SHARES RAFFLE April 5, 2009 - We will hold our first raffle for our Save-Mart Shares fundraiser! The Prize is a $20 gift certificate to the Visalia Farmer's Market - that's 10 $2 coupons to use at all the vendors! Your raffle ticket is your Save-Mart Receipt - bring them to worship service and deposit in the raffle box with your name on them.
SUMMER PLANS - Survey responses due by April 22, 2009 Many years ago, our Fellowship used to just fold-up for the season, but in the last three years, each summer we've enjoyed some terrific "summer sessions" with almost as much attendance as during the winter, but more opportunities for discussion and engagement as a community. In the past, we've explored Thoreau and Emerson as Spiritual Guides, "Award-Winning Sermons" and "Articulating our UU Faith." What would we like to do this year? Explore Ethical Eating? Have a book discussion on "Thank God for Evolution" or "Waging Peace"? Watch 30 minute videos on the Transcendentalist movement or world religions or then discuss? Have some craft sessions on building personal spiritual crafts, or non-toxic household cleaning? Please fill out a survey at church.

April 19, 2009 6:45 PM - Worship Team meeting in the Solarium after potluck.
April 26, 2009 7 PM - "Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth" presented by David Chandler at Friends Meeting House. David will bring us up to date on his work regarding the events of 9/11. David spoke to us two years ago about the evidence that the attacks of 9/11 were not the work of Middle Eastern terrorists but instead the work of agencies within the US. Among other things, David's work was central to forcing NIST, the government agency investigating the building collapses, to revise its findings and acknowledge that Building 7 descended at absolute freefall for several seconds, a fact that is incompatible with a natural collapse. If you would like a preview of David's work on this issue, see the links near the bottom of his web site, www.911speakout.org <http://www.911speakout.org/> .

THE GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT
Where do you really come from? And how did you get to where you live today? DNA studies suggest that all humans today descend from a group of African ancestors who-about 60,000 years ago-began a remarkable journey.
The Genographic Project is seeking to chart new knowledge about the migratory history of the human species by using sophisticated laboratory and computer analysis of DNA contributed by hundreds of thousands of people from around the world. In this unprecedented and of real-time research effort, the Genographic Project is closing the gaps of what science knows today about humankind's ancient migration stories.
Now you can be part of this effort! With a simple and painless cheek swab you can sample your own DNA and submit it to the the Genographic Project. They will test either your mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down each generation from mother to child and reveals your direct maternal ancestry; or your Y chromosome (males only), which is passed down from father to son and reveals your direct paternal ancestry. You choose which test you would like administered. Your results will reveal your deep ancestry along a single line of direct descent (paternal or maternal) and show the migration paths they followed thousands of years ago. Your results will also place you on a particular branch of the human family tree.
For information on how to order a DNA teting kit and to particpate in this research project, read about the Genographic Project online: http://genographic.nationalgeographic.com

Better Grass - from an editorial by Fresno UU Don Gaede - This three-year drought requires us to start thinking differently about our lawns. Sure they look beautiful. But they suck up an awful lot of water and chemicals, they require weekly mowing and edging and the lawnmowers foul our air. Citizens of California, it is time for a better lawn - one invented right here at the University of California Davis and UC Riverside. This lawn requires up to 75% less water (a quarter inch once a week) and only needs to be mowed once a year. It is called UC Verde Buffalo Grass, and is available in Fresno. UC Verde is custom-made for this Valley and this drought.
