If you're searching for a spiritual home that is guided by a quest for truth and meaning, not by a set creed or dogma, we invite you to discover Unitarian Universalism.

We are an open-minded religious community that encourages you to seek your own spiritual path, offering you resources to help you make your own decisions. Unitarian Universalist congregations are places where people gather to nurture their spirits and put their faith into action by helping to make our communities and the world a better place.

UU Visalia Fellowship News

Pledge Letters Coming. Members and regular visitors, please watch for a letter thanking you for your generous support in the past and asking for a financial commitment for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Please return your pledge card by April 18, 2010 so we can accurately estimate our anticipated income and can plan programs for the next fiscal year.

Visalia CropWalk Contributions.
Thanks to several UU members and friends for walking and collecting @$400 for this 32 year old interfaith hunger awareness event, which raises awareness of the need and funds for FoodLink of Tulare County and worldwide disaster relief.  Donations may be made to the 3/13/10 Visalia CropWalk through www.cropwalkonline.org or c/o UUFV, PO Box 3469, Visalia 93278.

Call to Members for Fellowship History.
Needed: digital photos of congregational events, historical documents from the past. We now have a volunteer videographer to tape oral histories of our founders and other long-time members. What is the story of the Visalia Unitarian Universalist Fellowship? Who started the church? (Don and Phyllis Chapin are still active members.) Where did we meet? What social issues did we get involved in? We would like to write up a history to post on the web and to format as a pamphlet. Volunteers needed to help with the interviews. Please contact a Board member if you are interested.

Please Label Ingredients of Potluck Dishes. Some members and visitors have serious food allergies and we want them to enjoy dinner without worry. We've started making a list of the ingredients of our potluck contributions on a post-it or index card. Particular concerns are peppers and wheat gluten. Secondary benefits are for vegetarians who may not be able to tell if meat is in a dish. Also, if you are willing to divulge your whole recipe, we will collect the cards to include in the Fellowship Cookbook Version #2.

Creating a Safer, More Secure and Greener Community Jan Spencer, from Eugene, Oregon, will be making a timely presentation to Visalia, Thursday, April 15. The presentation "Creating a Safer, More Secure and Greener Community," will focus on making our communities safer, more secure and green, all at the same time. The talk will have widespread appeal for many reasons. The location will be at the Friends Meeting House, 17208, Av 296, Visalia. Mix and Mingle at 6:30
Presentation at 7:00
The talk will be free and open to the public and will touch on a wide variety of topics and issues including economics, "power shift", changes in urban land use, neighborhood approaches, communities of faith, social cohesion and much more. The issues and strategies to meet deepening challenges are timely.
Core elements of the presentation include making better use of existing assets and opportunities for taking care of more of our needs closer to where we live. Holistic approaches are explained that can lead to multiple benefits and while calling forth positive human potential.
Permaculture - a powerful tool and system of design principles for making more effective green strategies and choices will also be explained.
Jan has been transforming his own 1/4 acre suburban property in Eugene for ten years - grass to garden, driveway replaced with edible landscaping, 6500 gallon capacity rain water storage, passive solar redesign, food growing all over, site for many tours, workshops and visits and much more. He has also been on the board of his neighborhood association for ten years, leading to a great appreciation for how neighborhoods are a powerful location for making our communities safer, more secure and green.
The speaking tour is intended to broaden the civic discussion about choices available to individuals and communities, given the deepening global trends relating to energy, the environment, economics, culture, peace, global relations, climate change and more. Jan will also have a DVD for sale that includes many of the points and issues made in the live presentation. The DVD is also available on his website.
For information about creating safer, more secure and greener communities, along with fotos of Jan's extensive property conversion project, the new DVD and essays about eco logical living, see www.suburbanpermaculture.org
