THE GIFT OF YOU, SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES at UU VISALIA

"Ministry happens wherever individuals embrace the belief that their good works, their volunteerism, their acts, can help serve the mission and vision of their congregation...ministry is something shared by all who are part of a spiritual community; a way to put faith into action for the benefit of the church and the wider community."
The Gift of You, Kathy van Leuwen, UU San Mateo

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals

By Michael Pollan

From Amazon.com: A national bestseller that has changed the way readers view the ecology of eating, this revolutionary book by award winner Michael Pollan asks the seemingly simple question: What should we have for dinner? Tracing from source to table each of the food chains that sustain us- whether industrial or organic, alternative or processed-he develops a portrait of the American way of eating. The result is a sweeping, surprising exploration of the hungers that have shaped our evolution, and of the profound implications our food choices have for the health of our species and the future of our planet.

Worship Service Calendar December 2010

December 5, "Thank God for the New Atheists!" by Michael Dowd, presented by Harold Wood. Often irreverent and controversial, the "new atheists" like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett and others promote a new challenge to traditional religion. But to Rev. Michael Dowd, this is a good thing, for he believes that ultimately religion is about Right Relationship with Reality, not the supernatural. To Rev. Dowd, the "new atheists" are "God's prophets!" This sermon shows how modern theology can embrace the ideas of the new atheists, while still promoting a valid form of religion and spiritual growth.

December 12, The Virgin of Guadalupe and the Aztec Goddess Tonantzin. Presented by Anna Garcia. Was the Virgin of Guadalupe (an indigenous manifestation of Christ's mother Mary) a Christian effort to replace an indigenous religion and the Goddess Tonantzin? Choir lead by Ken Elias will sing.

December 19,  Should UU's Celebrate Christmas?  Speaker Janet Wood. Today's sermon considers the universality of the Christmas message and why it is of value to Unitarian Universalists. Choir lead by Ken Elias will sing

December 26, "Out with the Old, In with the New" Led by Earl Cruser. "Out with the Old, In with the New." Earl Cruser will lead a service of meditation to help us clear our minds of the cares of the past, build trust in an unknown future, and help us to be open to the joy of the hear and now. Participants will have the opportunity to share their meditation practices and to learn from each other.

See the Announcement board in the foyer before and after every service for detailed information.

Visitors are cordially invited to join us for a buffet supper and fellowship immediately following the 5:00pm Worship Service.

New Book About Belief and Disbelief in God
    From a Unitarian Universalist Minister

Roger C. Schriner has recently published Bridging the Great God Gap: Finding Common Ground Among Believers, Atheists and Agnostics. Dr. Schriner is Minister Emeritus at Mission Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Fremont. His new book helps friends and family members deal with religious differences. It can also help us understand UUs whose theologies differ from our own. You may also want to read it if:

     * You don't believe in God, but some of those you care about are committed believers.
     * You believe in God, and you aren't sure how to communicate with atheists and agnostics.
     * Someone in your family quarrels with you about theology.
     * You aren't sure if you believe, and you want to reflect about whether there is a God and what God is like.

Bridging the Great God Gap includes exercises and meditations for exploring these topics, plus communication guidelines for discussing religion. The book is available for $19.46, including tax and shipping from Roger C. Schriner, 39541 Wilford Ct., Fremont CA 94538, cschriner@uuma.org.
