The Wilderness World of John Muir
By John Muir

During John Muir's extraordinary life as a conservationist, he traveled through most of the American wilderness alone and on foot, without a gun or a sleeping bag. In 1903, while on a three-day camping trip with President Theodore Roosevelt, he convinced the president of the importance of a national conservation program, and he is given major credit for saving the Grand Canyon and Arizona's Petrified Forest. Muir's writing, based on journals he kept throughout his life, gives our generation a picture of an America still wild and unsettled only one hundred years ago. Edwin Way Teale has collected here the best of Muir's writing, selected from all of his major works, including MY FIRST SUMMER IN THE SIERRA and TRAVELS IN ALASKA. THE WILDERNESS WORLD OF JOHN MUIR provides "reading that is often magnificent, thrilling, exciting, breathtaking, and awe-inspiring" (Kirkus Reviews).

Worship Service Calendar

Dear UU friends;

As many of you know, during the summer we have traditionally offered a more informal type of service. In keeping with this relaxed time of year, the worship committee thought it would be fun to share multicultural stories from the book titled Stories in Faith: Exploring our UU Principles and Sources Through Wisdom Tales by Forsyth-Vail and Hurd. We plan to share these stories every Sunday throughout the summer. In the introduction to their book the authors describe the purpose of these tales.

"We share our understanding of what it means to be human in groups and storytelling is a primary vehicle for this sharing. Stories reflect the wisdom and experience of the community. They are meant to be told and retold. Unitarian Universalism is a living tradition. We believe that revelation is neither fixed nor complete: there is much more spiritual truth yet to be discovered. One of the ways we discover this truth is in the dialogue between stories of the past and challenges of the present. Stories acquire overtones, for tellers and listeners, that give insights into life's meaning and purpose."

You and your family are invited to participate in the discussions which will follow the reading of the story, and to share your own family stories which relate to the topic of the day.

Jim Scott
UU Musician here on June 13

Composer, guitarist and singer Jim Scott will be our special guest at our Fellowship on June 13, 2010.  Don't miss this special event!

Several of Jim's songs are in our UU Hymnbooks, including the much loved Gather the Spirit."  Formerly a member of the Paul Winter Consort and co-composer of their Missa Gaia/Earth Mass, Jim has toured the world, recorded a number of CDs of original music and published a growing line of choral works.  Jim helped create the "Green Sanctuary" program for churches to become more sustainable, and has gathered and written the "Earth and Spirit Songbook," a collection of 110 songs of Earth and peace by many contemporary composers. A former board member of the UU Musicians Network, Jim has long been at the forefront of the movement for new music in the denomination.
He has lead courses in Improvisation at such prestigious music schools as Oberlin College and has a knack for putting participants in touch with their innate creativity power of musical expression.

     Years of activism are reflected in Jim's work.  His songs, poetry and short stories address issues of ecology, justice and peace with insight and gentle wit.  For all his varied professional background, it is Jim's lyrical songs that remain his greatest offering.   He transforms any size audience into an intimate gathering with a guitar skill and disarming presence that inspires and educates.

    From songs andchoral music to soundtracks for documentaries and the PBS series Body and Soul, Jim has made music with a depth of artistry and craft that separates his art from that of many other singer songwriters.  His musical "The Tree and Me" has been given full cast productions in Jamestown NY and Albion MI. A whole line of Jim's choral compositions and his book of guitar technique "All Scales in All Positions" are published by Hal Leonard Corp.

     Jim helped to create the "Green Sanctuary" program and accompanying handbook for building an ecological/spiritual awareness in church congregations.  He performs many benefit concerts and often appears at events, supporting environmental and peace causes with his music.
