  • Best wishes to you from UU Fellowship of Visalia! We've got lots of interesting things going on this month! Remember, Sunday services are always at 5 p.m., with a potluck dinner afterwards. But we've got several early programs this month - 3 p.m.on October 1 for "An Inconvenient Truth" and 4 p.m.on October 8 for a "Drumming Circle." Hope to see you at the Fellowship!

Upcoming Worship Services and Regular Fellowship Events

October 1, 2006 - 5 p.m. - "Save Darfur" - A PowerPoint presentation and discussion on Darfur by Visalian Irene Morse. She will talk about the politics and geography of the genocide, and her group's efforts to aid the Iridimi Refugee Camp. She and her co-presenter will explain their decision to provide Solar Cookers to help these people who have suffered so much. A demonstration of the Solar Cookers will also take place.

October 8, 2006 - 4 p.m. - Preceding the October 8th 5pm service, there will be a Drum Circle for those who are interested, beginning at 4pm.  If you have a drum bring it and if not, one will be furnished.  If you have never participated in a Drum Circle before, it will be a wonderful time to try it.  If you are an experienced drummer, your expertise is welcomed.  This is guaranteed to be a spiritual experience.  We will meet on the lawn at the back of the meeting house.

5 p.m. - "Dia de la Raza" - A dramatic presentation and discussion on human rights in colonization and imperialism, both in the past and in the present.

October 15, 2006 - 5 p.m. - United Nations Sunday    Learn what the UU Office of the United Nations does and is planning for the future. A special collection will be taken this day for the benefit of the UU-UNO.

October 22, 2006 - 5 p.m.. - Celebrate Divali (The Indian Festival of Light) Hear the words of the ancient scriptures that have shaped Indian thought.  The potluck will feature Indian Food. If you need a recipe, please contact Katherine.

October 29,2006 - 5 p.m. - A service of remembrance.  Members and friends are asked to bring a picture of a loved one who has died, and a story to tell about the individual (optional)  This will be a candlelight service.  If possible, please bring pictures to the Fellowship in the weeks preceding the service so that the appropriate number of luminaria can be prepared.

    Flaming Chalice

In September we had some wonderful programs during our Sunday services!

On Labor Day, we had a fascinating discussion among congregants about the meaning of work and life. It is wonderful we had so many social workers and professional "caregivers" in our congregation! We might not all be engaged in such noble professions, but we all agreed that the dignity of good work at fair wages is something that should be available to everyone. Too many people even in America are working with "sweat shop wages" and cannot make ends meet.

On September 10, we had our special "Ingathering" service to welcome everyone back from their summer comings and goings! Members shared water and experiences from vacation travels across America and as far as Scotland! We had a Child Dedication to welcome baby Emma to our congregation. Proud parents Kim and Dennis were joined by "Gramma Sue" and their other children.

We especially enjoyed welcoming four new members to our congregation! A warm welcome to Ben, Lesley, Mona, and Connie.

On September 17, our Fellowship celebrated the International Day of Peace. An Action of Immediate Witness was adopted at our UU national General Assembly in 2006 to join the Declaration of Peace Campaign. The story of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes was shared and peace songs sung. Also, Pete Mora, Special Operations Military Intelligence Officer for the US Army at Camp Delta, Abu Graib Prison in Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan shared his experiences in these places, and his views on the future of peace in Iraq.

On September 24th the meaning of the Islamic Month of Ramadan was defined in poetry and song. Then, David Hodges provided guidance on "living alone and liking it" as well as his experiences in introspection and reflection in his presentation on "Solitude" which was followed by a terrific group discussion in the Sun Room prior to the potluck.

    Ministries to Incarcerated UU's

The Church of the Larger Fellowship (CLF), a cyber-space congregation providing Unitarian Universalism to isolated religious liberals, offers a spiritual lifeline to incarcerated UUs.

Almost 300 prisoners across the US have joined the UU Church of the Larger Fellowship, with more every month. With no access to the web or UU Sunday services, prisoners’ only way of learning more about UUism is through written publications, and letters exchanged with CLF staff and other UUs.

Sadly, dozens of CLF prisoner-members have been waiting for many months to be matched with a UU penpal through the CLF’s Letter Writing Ministry. Members of any UU congregation who might like to write to a CLF prisoner-member are invited to visit the CLF website:

    www.clufuu.org.

Anyone interested in joining a prison pen-pal support group within our UU Visalia congregation? If so, please e- mail Social Justice chair: Harold Wood at harold@uuvisalia.org
